What is Coaching?
“A Coach works with you to remove the blinders, allowing you to see what you already know, and support forward movement. A Christian Coach is there for you, prayerfully listening to your concerns and asking questions that will give you clarity and perspective on your situation to get you past your own blocks, realize your God-given potential, and challenge you to be your best” (Christian Coaches Network).
Coaching is all about moving forward. It’s about clarifying your thoughts and ideas, and then striving for change through action. And it’s about stretching your mind and challenging you to see things from new perspectives.
Coaching is similar to a few other professions, but unique in that it offers you the chance to become aware of what you already know and use that to learn more. Allow me to explain by way of metaphor.
Imagine a person who is lost in the middle of a dark forest. A counselor would take that person and lead them back the way they came (focus on the past). A consultant would stand at a fork in the path and inform the person where each path would lead them (objective information). A mentor would walk in front of the lost individual with a flashlight and lead the way out (teach from experience). A coach, however, walks beside the individual and helps them learn to find their own way out based on the tools and equipment they brought with them (learning skills).
What Coaching Offers to You
Coaching provides a confidential and safe environment for you to be who you are. It emphasizes personal growth and support as you journey through life. As your coach, I can offer more objective feedback than close friends and family members while still investing in you and challenging you to reach your personal best.
Often people who have been coached walk away with an increased self-awareness, more confidence, and strengthened values and beliefs. They choose to take responsibility for their actions and are able to create a support system that will continue to be of service to them when the coaching relationship ends.
Am I the Right Coach for You?
Most coaches work either over the phone or face-to-face. I, however, offer coaching primarily through email because it is how I coach most effectively. I am a writer, and I realize that I need the time to process and reflect on your thoughts before sending a question or different perspective your way.
Email coaching works best with individuals who need or want the time to process before responding. Also, they need to be fairly responsible, as it’s easy to let an email sit in the inbox for a long period of time. Do you prefer writing emails to talking on the phone? Do you find it easy to write a note rather than approach someone in person? Then email coaching might be a good fit for you.
Here are some other benefits to email coaching:
- Allows you to be fully present. Sometimes during coaching calls, people come with no real need to be coached at the moment, or are distracted by something else going on. Email offers you the chance to respond only when you are able to be fully present with the conversation, which practically ensures that the response is honest and authentic.
- Allows you to get coaching when you need it. Similarly, if you have a problem or issue that’s frustrating you, you don’t have to wait until a scheduled coaching session. You can just sit down and send an email, not only so that I can support you but also so you can get your frustration or anger out. Sometimes just writing it down helps.
- Record of the journey. During conversations with close friends, you don’t always have notepaper near by to write down what you learn. Email exhanges automatically record our conversation, making it possible for you to look back and review your lessons or celebrate the changes you have made.
- Worksheets and Personal Exercises. Through email, I can send you worksheets and exercises that are specifically designed with you in mind to help you work through a particular area in your life, such as identifying your values or learning to see the past differently.
What Others Say…
Laura H. (Indiana) - “The coaching sessions were a very useful experience for me. I grew a lot in all areas of my life through the encouragement of my coach and her willingness to lead me but also let me work at my own pace to be able to really discover ideas myself. Coaching is one of the best things that has helped me grow more into the person that I want to become.”
Eva D. (Philippines) - “I want to send Kari a big hug for all her support during my process. I have learned so much. To stop, feel, and know my values instead of just running towards tomorrow and not living in the moment. I have always tried to live in the moment, but in some way I couldn’t. Today, I know I can.”
